Truly “A Crude Awakening”
Last night I was sitting on my couch surfing my TV looking for some mindless dribble until I came across The National by CBC.  The news program was airing a special report called “A Crude Awakening” this program essentially outlined the environmental impact of extracting oil form the Tar sands located in northern Alberta, many of which Canadians are completely unaware of. According to top scientists the process of extracting this oil at the rate we are will catapult Canada to the top of the list, as one of the worlds worst polluters of Green House Gases. Already the landscape of north Alberta is scarred with large open pit mines and an area the size of Vancouver Island has been approved for further development.Â
In order to separate the crude oil from sand and soil deposits to feed the North American hunger for fossil fuels, oil companies burn enough natural gas in a single day to heat over 3 million homes. As a result, refineries located in northern Alberta produce over 40 million tones of green house gases annually which is equivalent to added a minimum of 10 million additional cars to Canadian roads annually.
